Bell attended the Burton International school for gifted children, where she studied singing and tap-dancing. Her first role was as a banana in a production of “Raggedy Ann and Andy.” In high school, Bell joined a theater group called Stagecrafters. Shortly after she was accepted to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Bell received the shocking news that Jenny DeRita, her best friend and fellow high school actor, was killed in a car crash. Bell said this terrible tragedy taught her “not to take things for granted anymore.” Bell studied musical theater at NYU. She quit school just four credits short of graduation when she was offered the role of Becky Thatcher in a Broadway production of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” Her next role on Broadway in a 2002 revival of “The Crucible,” where she co-starred with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney.
